beta-secretase has been identified as a novel membrane-bound aspartyl protease named BACE1 (beta-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1). It is one of two endopeptidases that cleave the beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) resulting in the accumulation of the beta-amyloid deposits involved in the development of Alzheimer's disease.
