Background :

The Sox17 protein is a member of the SOX (SRY-related HMG-box) family of transcription factors involved in the regulation of embryonic development and in the determination of the cell fate. While Sox17 has been known to be involved in the regulation of the formation of cells that go on to develop into endodermal tissues like pancreatic and liver cells, recent studies have also shown that this transcription factor plays a critical role in the regulation of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells, the maintenance of fetal hematopoeitic stem cells, and in the mediation of cardiac muscle cell formation.
