Background :
Mitochondrial antiviral-signaling protein (MAVS) is thought to activate NF-KappaB and IRF 3, which increase antiviral immunity. This result seems to point to mitochondrial involvement in innate immunity, specifically during viral infection. MAVS also seems to be involved in the activation of interferons, but only during viral contamination. It has been shown that MAVS works in conjunction with retinoic acid inducible gene I (RIG-I) to identify and remove replicating viral genomes. MAVS has been shown to be cleaved during apoptosis and viral infection, which could mean that this is an essential step of infection.
