Background :

CD205 (DEC-205) is a C-type lectin receptor belonging to the macrophage mannose receptor (MMR) family. It is a putative endocytic receptor specific to the uptake and processing of captured antigens for dendritic cells (DC), and is especially known for its expression and presence on the cell surface of CD8+ DCs. CD8+CD205+ DCs are unique in that they seem to be specialized to the uptake of apoptotic cells, in their ability to resist certain viral infections, and their apparent specialization for cross-presentation (Dudziak, 2007). CD205 is a 205 kDa protein, comprised of 10 external, adjacent c-type lectin domains. Splice variants are known to produce 4 isoforms. Isoforms 2 and 3 are of interest in the study of malignant Hodgkin lymphoma cells or HRS cells. CD205 is also a target of interest in therapeutic drug research for Epstein-Barr virus. The protein has been observed in colon, spleen, thymus and peripheral lymphocytes, and has also been observed in both myeloid and B lymphoid cell lines.
