Thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) belong to the nuclear receptor family, which includes the steroid hormone, vitamin D, and retinoic acid receptors. Members of this family feature a DNA-binding domain containing two zinc fingers and carboxy-terminal ligand-binding domain. TRalpha-1, which is encoded on a separate gene, is homologous to the TRbetas in both the DNA and ligand-binding domains. The TRs signal by heterodimerization with RXRbeta.
