Description :
Neuroserpin is an axonally secreted serine proteinase inhibitor that is expressed in neurons during embryogenesis and in the adult nervous system and is implicated in the regulation of proteases involved in processes such as synaptic plasticity, neuronal migration and axogenesis. Neuroserpin plays a neuroprotective role, by blocking the deleterious effects of proteolytic enzymes such as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). A familial form of a neurodegenerative disease, termed familial encephalopathy with neuroserpin inclusion bodies, is caused by the intracellular polymerization and accumulation of mutated neuroserpin, leading to neuronal death and dementia.
