Gene Full Name :
phospholipase A2 group VII
Synonyms :
Platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase; PAF acetylhydrolase; 1-alkyl-2-acetylglycerophosphocholine esterase; 2-acetyl-1-alkylglycerophosphocholine esterase; Group-VIIA phospholipase A2; gVIIA-PLA2; LDL-associated phospholipase A2; LDL-PLA (2); PAF 2-acylhydrolase; PLA2G7; PAFAH
Protein Name :
Platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase
Protein Function :
Modulates the action of platelet-activating factor (PAF) by hydrolyzing the sn-2 ester bond to yield the biologically inactive lyso-PAF. Has a specificity for substrates with a short residue at the sn-2 position. It is inactive against long-chain phospholipids.
Subcellular Localization :
Secreted, extracellular space.
Tissue Specificity :
Plasma
Background :
Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) also known as platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase (PAF-AH) is a phospholipase A2 enzyme that in humans is encoded by the PLA2G7 gene. Lp-PLA2 is a 45-kDa protein of 441 amino acids. It is one of several PAF acetylhydrolases. The protein encoded by this gene is a secreted enzyme that catalyzes the degradation of platelet-activating factor to biologically inactive products. Defects in this gene are a cause of platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase deficiency. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene.
