Background :

Together with the Uroplakins UP Ia, UP Ib and UP II, UP III is a constituent of the Asymmetric Unit Membrane of urothelial Umbrella cells. It is a 47 kDa glycoprotein, which is thought to be a specific marker for differentiated urothelia. UP III is found in surface membranes of urothelial cells of the kidney, bladder and urinary collection tract. In paraffin sections app. 60% of transitional cell carcinoma stain focally with Uroplakin III antibodies. Yet no Uroplakin has been found in non-urothelian carcinoma. Therefore it seems to be a specific marker of urothelial cells in metastases of unknown origin of the primary tumours.
