Background :

The gene product of the tumour suppressor-gene p53 can be detected inmost body cells, however immunohistochemical detection methods often are not sensitive enough for detection of the protein in normal cells. Since the mutated protein is enriched in point mutations related to cancerogenesis, it is detected also by immunohistochemistry when such neoplasms are investigated.
