Background :
Insulin is a polypeptide hormone that is produced in the B-cells of pancreatic islets as a pro-hormone which is transformed into active insulin after cleavage of the s. c. C-peptide. The MW of insulin is app. 5800 Da. It consists of an alpha- and beta-chain, which are connected by two disulfide bridges. The hormone regulates the uptake of glucose into the cell. A deficit of insulin production causes Diabetes mellitus. Over-production of insulin (together with hyperglycaemia) usually is caused by insulinoma, which are the most frequently occurring pancreatic tumours.
