Background :
HCG, the human chorionic gonadotrophin is an important hormone, which is synthesized during pregnancy by syncytiotrophoblasts of the placenta. It is essentially required for the maintenance of pregnancy and reaches very high concentrations in the blood. Like pituitary glycoprotein hormones it consists of an alpha and a beta chain. Alpha chains of these hormones are almost identical in structure and aa sequences, while beta chains have more different aa sequences. Beta chains seem to be responsible for the different hormone-specific activities. The single chains have no known biological activity, but they are exprimed and secreted in reasonable amounts by some neoblastic tissues.

HCG and ß-HCG, cross-reaction with alpha-HCG 0%, hLH 0,3%, hTSH 0,02%, hFSH 0,01%
