Lidocaine is a commonly used local anesthetic as well as an antiarrythmic drug, which is a potent and selective blocker of voltage gated sodium channels (Nav). Lidocaine is a state dependent inhibitor of the channel, with stronger inhibitory action towards the inactivated state. Once compared directly for its inhibitory effects on TTX-resistant currents and on the TTX-sensitive Nav1.2 channel, it was demonstrated that both types of currents are sensitive to Lidocaine in an activity dependent manner.
