Background :
MAO-A (Monoamine oxidase type A) is categorized as a part of the flavin monoamine oxidase family based on sequence. MAO-A catalyzes the oxidative deamination of amines which is important to the metabolism of neuroactive and vasoactive amines in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. MAO-A preferentially oxidizes biogenic amines including 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), norepinephrine and epinephrine. MAO-A defects are the cause of Brunner syndrome, an X-linked, non-dysmorphic, form of mild mental retardation. MAO-A is found in the tissues of the heart, liver, duodenum, blood vessels and kidney.
