Background :

Lung surfactant is a complex of phospholipids and proteins which is secreted by type II alveolar cells. It is decreasing the surface tension in the airways and is essential for unobstructed ventilation. Up to now 4 different proteins have been isolated and have been defined as surfactant proteins A, B, C and D: SP-A and SP-D are collagenous carbohydrate binding proteins while SP-B and SP-C are non-collagenous proteins.
